NEW HAMPSHIRE -- A cat rescued after its owner tried to snap its neck and abandoned it is up for adoption at the Manchester Animal Shelter, the shelter said in a release.
"When Smokey became ill last April with a urinary tract infection, police say his owner tried to break his neck because he couldn't afford the veterinarian bills. When Smokey passed out from lack of oxygen instead of the break, the owner tossed him into bushes by the side of a Manchester parking lot thinking he was dead.
"Fortunately, a passerby heard Smokey's cries and contacted animal control. The owner, who was found guilty on two counts of animal cruelty, was ordered to pay a $1,200 fine with $1,000 suspended for three years. He also was prohibited from owning or caring for an animal during that time. The Manchester Animal Shelter believes this case serves as an important reminder for pet owners to treat their animals humanely, even when faced with high veterinary bills."
[If you cannot afford vet care for your pet, do the right thing and take it to be humanely put down or find someone who wants your pet and can afford the vet care it needs. Would you throttle your elderly grandmother and try to break her neck to 'put her out of her misery'??? Geez.]
Smokey, who is still at the shelter, will be going to a foster home “to get some extra love and to let him learn to trust again,” the release said. He is up for adoption. Anyone interested in adopting him can call the shelter at 628-3544.
