TEXAS -- John Hay tells KEYE TV News, his two basset hounds were attacked by a pit bull in his girlfriend’s neighborhood last week.
The attack happened in the 2600 block of Cockburn Street near William Cannon and Manchaca.
Hay and his girlfriend Christy Cook say they got a call from Cook’s roommate telling them Hay’s dogs, 10-year-old Belle and 6-year-old Madison, had been attacked.
"Belle, the older one, was very badly hurt and was bleeding all over the place could walk a little bit but not great," said Hay.
They rushed Belle to a nearby vet hospital that night. Hay says Belle was under the knife for two hours.
"She’s got about a hundred staples and also stitches. Madison got bit once and Belle jumped in. The vet said he was really surprised that Belle was able to live because the cuts were from her neck all the way down," said Hay.
Cook says she wasn’t aware of the other dog until it attacked Hay's basset hounds.
"The day that John’s dogs were attacked, a neighbor said it wasn’t the first time that dog had attacked.
There’s about a 4-foot high chain-link fence he leaps over to attack," said Cook.
That night, Hay and Cook called 311. Police went to the neighborhood to file a report.
"It’s unfortunate the dog is able to jump the fence and the owners would not do more to protect their neighbors," said Hay.
"The police have been out here and they act like they would like to help but unfortunately they said their purpose is really reactive so it’s going to take something worse happening for them to step in. Animal control needs to do something," Cook said.
Animal Control officials say they are looking into the case. KEYE TV was unable to reach the owner of the other dog for comment.
