Girl mauled in violent dog attack in Kingman

ARIZONA -- A 12-year-old Michigan girl is recovering from multiple dog bites she received while visiting her grandmother's home in Kingman Tuesday night, police said.

Capt. Rusty Cooper said the three dogs involved have been placed in quarantine because of rabies concerns. The dog that instigated the attack, a 2-year-old Great Dane, is scheduled to be euthanized following the quarantine, he said.

Cooper said the girl was petting one of four of her uncle's dogs in the 2000 block of Pawnee Drive when the Great Dane attacked. The dog was then joined by two 1-year-old boxers. The dog that the girl was petting, also a boxer, was not involved in the attack, Cooper said.

The girl sustained multiple bites to her head, arms and upper torso, including a significant gash on her right upper arm that penetrated muscle. The 30-year-old uncle was also bitten after he came to the girl's aid, Cooper said.

Both were transported to the hospital. The girl was described by police as coherent and alert following the attack.

Neither the man nor the girl's names were released by police because no criminal charges are being filed. Cooper said the owner was "extremely cooperative" with Animal Control officers and that the man said the dogs had never given any prior indication of aggression.

"The owner was surprised and shocked by the dogs," Cooper said. "The girl did nothing to provoke them."
