Linwood man accused of killing pit bull

NORTH CAROLINA -- A man is facing a cruelty to animals charge after an incident this past month at his home on Linwood Road.

Charles Bernard Watson, 48, of 512 Linwood Road, has been charged with felony cruelty to animals. He received a $5,000 secured bond and has a court date of Sept. 18.

Watson failed to give a dog shelter to protect a pit bull from the sun and the heat, causing the dog to die from a heat stroke, according to a Lexington Police arrest report. An arrest warrant filed in the Davidson County Clerk of Court's Office alleges the offense occurred between July 25 and Saturday.

An incident report stated the department's animal control officer responded to 512 Linwood Road in reference to a deceased animal in the yard. The dog was seized and taken to Davidson Animal Hospital, at which time an autopsy occurred. A veterinarian determined the pit bull died of a heat stroke, according to the report.
