"They... have never attacked any other dogs"

UNITED KINGDOM -- Rottweilers Posh and Becks face being put down after attacking a neighbour's dog.

Staffordshire Police have applied to the courts for an order which could lead to the animals being destroyed.

Police are taking action after the pets – named after celebrity couple David and Victoria Beckham – escaped from their owner's garden and began fighting with another dog.

Now distraught owner Philip Hansell is pleading with magistrates to keep Posh and Becks alive.

A canine behaviourist is being brought in to check on the dogs' temper before the next court hearing.

Property landlord Hansell, aged 50, said today: "They are lovely dogs. They would never harm a human being and have never attacked any other dogs. To be honest, they are 12 years old now. You take them out and by the time they are walking back they're on their last legs.

"The other dog's got a few scratches. But it is not unusual for dogs to fight if they're off their lead."

Hansell, of Swan Bank, Talke, admitted keeping dogs which were out of control when he appeared at North Staffordshire Magistrates' Court.

It is understood Posh and Becks – which are kept as guard dogs – escaped through an open garden gate and then attacked a charcoal-coloured dog in the morning of April 22.

Hansell's partner Debbie Yates is backing the fight to save Posh and Becks. The 48-year-old children's nursery worker said: "I'm a big dog lover and I've really taken to the dogs and they've taken to me. It's very, very harsh if the courts take the decision to have them destroyed.

"We just have to make extra sure now that they are secure.

"The gates must have only been open a bit, and we didn't realise the dogs could barge through big double gates like that. I just hope the magistrates see sense and they are not put down.

"I'll go to pieces if they have to be destroyed."

If Posh and Becks are spared then the courts will issue a 'last chance' order demanding that the animals are kept under control.

Hansell is next in court on September 17.
