Delaware: Sandra Kelsch, 49, and Edward Kelsch, 48, arrested for having child and dozens of animals in home caked in fecal matter

DELAWARE -- A Newark couple was arrested Friday when police found that they had a child living in a home where dozens of animals roamed and defecated on the floor.

Sandra Kelsch, 49, and her husband Edward Kelsch, 48, were charged with endangering the welfare of the 12-year-old child who was living in their home in the 800 block of Chambers Road in Newark.

Officers from the New Castle County Police Department and the SPCA found that cats, ducks, rabbits and 17 dogs were living in the home and had been urinating and defecating throughout the residence, causing unsanitary conditions, police said.

The hardwood floors and walls were saturated in urine and feces, said County Police spokesman Cpl. John Weglarz. Officers say flies were everywhere in the home, including inside the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Police said that the dogs were kept in the garage and some were in poor health.

The 12-year-old who was living in the home was taken to AI DuPont Hospital for Children where they confirmed that he had no health issues.

The child was medically cleared and has been temporarily placed with relatives.

New Castle County Code Enforcement condemned the home and deemed it unfit for the child to live in due to the conditions posing a risk to the physical health of the child, police said.

Ten cats that could not be caught had to be left behind.

Um, OK, I can see you leaving them behind - but setting humane traps to capture them and regularly returning to check the traps. But to just leave them behind in a condemned house to die?

Both Kelsch’s have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child. They were each arraigned and released on $500 unsecured bail.
