ILLINOIS -- Berwyn police shot and killed two “extremely aggressive” pit bulls Thursday morning after one of the dogs attacked a woman and killed her dog, then went after responding officers.
At about 7:40 a.m. Thursday, Berwyn police responded to several 911 calls about a pit bull attack in the area of 27th Street and Ridgeland Avenue. Witnesses said a pit bull came out from under the fence of a home and attacked a woman walking her small dog, a release from police said.
Police saw two extremely aggressive pit bulls in the rear of the home in the 2600 block of Ridgeland and one of them jumped over a five-foot high fence in the front and started toward officers. There was a group of children and their parents walking to school in the area at the time.
Because of the “immediate threat to everyone in the area,” officers shot and killed the “extremely dangerous” pit bull, police said in the release. At the same time, the second pit bull -- also called “dangerously aggressive” -- jumped the fence in the rear of the home and was fatally shot by officers.
The small dog, of an unknown breed, died from injuries inflicted by the pit bull. The woman, who was attacked while trying to protect her dog, was taken to a hospital with injuries that included dog bites, according to police.
One officer suffered minor, superficial wounds to his left and right calf areas while trying to stop the first pit bull. The officer was treated at a hospital and released.
Police continue to investigate and said charges could be filed against the owners of the pit bulls.
