Child mauled by dogs

TEXAS -- A bizarre incident in South Jasper County has left a small child with serious injuries.

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said he and his deputies were called to County Road 601A, south of Kirbyville, shortly before 7:00, on Tuesday evening, when it was reported that several dogs had attacked a man as he walked down the road with his son in his arms.

Neighbors said Jessie Maddox, 28, held the 6 month old boy in his arms and climbed on top of a pipeline guard in an attempt to escape from the dogs. However, the dogs were able to jump and bite Maddox and the young child’s leg, causing serious injury to the boy.

A neighbor with a cell phone took a photo of the attack in
progress. The photo shows the legs of the man, holding the
baby, trying to keep the baby away from the dogs.

The child was taken to a Houston area hospital, where he was at last word, still undergoing treatment and Maddox was treated for what was said to be minor injuries.

Sheriff Newman said the dogs which consisted of one pit bull and four mix breeds were taken to the City of Jasper’s Animal Shelter, where they are being held as the investigation into the incident continues.
