MICHIGAN -- One man was arrested and two dogs destroyed after an attack Wednesday afternoon.
Battle Creek police said Zachary Baldwin, 19, of Battle Creek, the victim of the dog attack, was taken to Bronson Battle Creek with injuries to his head, neck, arms and leg but is expected to recover.
Johnny Henderson, 27, of Battle Creek was arrested on a charge of felonious assault after officers said he allegedly commanded two pit bulls to attack Baldwin about 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said Baldwin had gone with Henderson’s former girlfriend to a home at 55 Scenery St. where Henderson was living.
The former girlfriend owns the house, police said, and she asked Baldwin, a friend, to serve eviction papers on Henderson.
Officer Doug Bagwell said Baldwin approached Henderson and handed him the papers and the two men exchanged some angry words. As Baldwin was walking away, he told officers, he heard Henderson say, “Monster, get him.”
A 3-year-old male Pit Bull Terrier then attacked Baldwin and was joined by a second dog, a 1-year-old Pit Bull named Bella.
Police said the dogs attacked Baldwin near the street and Baldwin said he was also punched by Henderson. Baldwin was able to retreat to the car and the woman drove him to Arthur and Corwin streets and called Lifecare Ambulance.
Henderson told police the dogs escaped from the fenced yard and that Baldwin attacked him with a piece of wood, an allegation Baldwin denied. Officers said they will submit a warrant request to the prosecutor’s office for review for assault against Baldwin.
Animal Control Officers Mike Ehart and Ronda Burgess seized the two dogs and took them to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter after Henderson relinquished ownership. Ehart said the animals would be euthanized.
