Pleasantville police shoot pit bull that attacked 7-year-old girl

NEW JERSEY -- A dog was shot and killed Monday morning after it attacked a little girl, her mom and a passing motorist who tried to help, police said.

The attack happened at about 8:30 a.m. at South Chester Avenue and the Black Horse Pike, Capt. Rocky Melendez said.

A pit bull running loose attacked a 7-year-old girl, whose mother rushed to help her, Melendez said.

A motorist passing by stopped to help and got bitten twice, he said. The dog also came at an officer, who fatally shot it.

The girl was not injured, and the Good Samaritan refused medical attention, Melendez said.
It is not known who owned the dog.

This is the second time in a week a dog has been shot and killed by police in the city.

Last week, a pit bull that attacked another dog was shot after officers broke up the two dogs, and the pit bull then came at the officers, according to the report.
