CALIFORNIA -- Riverside County Animal Services officers had their hands full, literally, while rescuing a potbellied pig on Highway 91 Saturday.
Officers responded to a “loose pig” call about 4 p.m.
Lt. Chris Mayer of Riverside County Animal Services tranquilized the road hog and then transported the porcine animal to the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley.
How the big potbellied pig ended up on the freeway is not known.
An owner has not stepped forward.
The pig reportedly was on the freeway “for some time” and forced the California Highway Patrol to shut down the westbound 91 for a short period.
The animal was tranquilized near the Central Avenue exit in Riverside.
