RHODE ISLAND -- A Woonsocket official is looking to cut down on the city's population of pit bulls and other "dangerous" dogs.
According to the Woonsocket Call, City Council President John Ward is proposing a new ordinance to reduce these animals.
If passed, the proposal would ban any new pit bulls in the city after the law is approved.
To be considered legal, pit bulls would have to be registered before the law goes into effect and owners would have to carry $100,000 worth of liability insurance on the dog.
The proposal comes after three people were bitten by a pit bull on Sayles Street in September.
The measure is scheduled to be taken up at a meeting Monday night, but Ward believes it will be tabled to give the council a chance to gather feedback.
