Man stabs pit bull in self defense, cops say

FLORIDA -- Davie police said it appears a man stabbed a pit bull in self defense Friday night, but the dog owner's family doesn't agree.

"He pulled out a knife on one of my dogs. She was bleeding all over the place," said a family member.

Police said the brutality began when a worker arrived at a Davie apartment looking to get paid.

Instead though, police said the boss unleashed two pit bulls on him.

"The dog owner set the dogs free on this individual," Davie Police Department Capt. Dale Engle said.

The dog bit the worker in the groin and in the arm before that worker was able to fight back with a pocket knife.

"Was it self defense?" Local 10's Ross Palombo asked.

"It sounds like it," Engle answered.

"They weren't set loose. He jumped the fence and attacked my dogs for no reason," dog owner Ann Santana said.

But, police insist it was really about money owed and work repaid with violence.

The man who stabbed the dog was taken to a hospital and treated for cuts, and is expected to be okay.

The man who allegedly set those dogs loose has not yet been arrested, but police said he may face battery charges.

The injured dog, 'Reign', is at the vet and expected to recover.

"My dogs are the sweetest in the world!" Santana said. "She's in an oxygen tank and she should survive."
