Michigan: Abandoned dog found with no food, water or shelter in Van Buren County

MICHIGAN -- Police responded to an animal cruelty/abandonment complaint in Van Buren County on Wednesday and found an abandoned dog.

Police were called to a residence in the 100 block of East St. Mary's Street in Decatur around 1 p.m.

Deputies found a Great Dane mix dog in a small animal crate with no food, water or shelter, according to a news release from the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

The dog's crate was just big enough for the dog to lie down, but it had to lay in its own feces and urine.

Officers learned from neighbors that the owner had moved out and left the dog behind at least five days ago, according to the release.

A 24-year-old man from Decatur is a suspect in the case but has not been located. The dog was transported to the Van Buren County Animal Control facility in Hartford for safe housing, feeding and care.
