TEXAS -- It’s safe to say that this dog was far from man’s best friend.
A pit bull was taken to the Dallas pound after biting a resident on the 300 block of West Lawson Road and attacking two other dogs Monday night.
After police were notified that the loose pit bull was chasing residents, Bobby Hipp saw it attack another dog and tried stop the fight, according to Dallas police. As Hipp tried to separate the dogs, he was bitten and sustained minor cuts on his ring finger.
The dog returned home, jumping into its owners’ fenced backyard. It then attacked its third victim, another pit bull that was chained to a tree. The homeowners was not home at the time.
Despite efforts by neighbors who tried spraying water to separate the two dogs, they fought violently and began to show severe bleeding injuries. At one point, the attacking pit bull has its jaw locked around the other’s neck.
The owners of the home returned and separated the dogs into different yards, to no avail. They began biting each other through a fence.
Police fired pepper-ball rounds at the pit bulls in an effort to stop them from fighting. When this failed, the homeowner was able to move one of the dogs into a kennel, and animal control arrived to take custody of the original pit bull. It was taken to the city pound.
No charges have been filed. According to the police report, Hipp refused medical treatment for his bites but “said he might go to the hospital on his own for a rabies shot.”
In July, Staff Writers Scott Goldstein and Tanya Eiserer reported that there had been at least 14 Dallas police shootings in 2012 involving aggressive dogs, and that the police department was taking steps to better train officers to fend off dangerous dogs.
Many of the shootings involved calls regarding aggressive pit bulls and included attacks on officers or others.
