Police arrest man in animal cruelty case

TEXAS -- Brownsville police have arrested Joel Perez, 50, and charged him with animal abuse after Animal Control received an anonymous tip about a horse that was possibly dead, police spokesman J.J. Treviño said in a press release.

Officials said an anonymous tip led them to the malnourished horse. Animal control officers found the animal laying down and weak. The horse had to be euthanized.

He said Perez told police that he was being paid to take care of the horse and would feed him everyday, but could not provide a name or contact information for the horse’s owner, Treviño said, adding that it was obvious that the animal did not have adequate care.

Perez’s bail was set at $2,000.
