OHIO -- A starving dog whom police believe survived by eating garbage was rescued Saturday from a garage in the 200 block of East 29th Street.
Police said they responded around 9:45 p.m. to a noise complaint about a large party at the house where the garage was.
They said the homeowner moved a couple of years ago and her son has been living in the home. They said the home had electricity, but no running water or furniture. They said the son had fled when officers arrived.
The 2- to 4-year-old mastiff was heard barking in the garage. The dog was tied to a table with a rope, unable to move and lying in garbage infested with maggots and flies, according to a police report. An officer wrote that the dog was emaciated and covered with sores and lying in its own feces.
The dog was taken to the Lorain Animal Emergency Clinic and weighed 94 pounds. The officer wrote that a healthy dog its age and height should weigh 150 pounds.
The report said that the son of the homeowner knew about the dog and should’ve cared for it.
“Instead, he left this dog to suffer inside these deplorable conditions and nearly starve to death,” the report said.
The report is being forwarded to the city prosecutor’s office with a recommendation that the son be charged with animal cruelty.
