NEW YORK -- St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies charged a Town of Parishville woman Thursday with cruelty to animals, following an investigation into the neglect of several horses on Buckton Road.
Deputies said Rose L. Malone, 50, of Old Potsdam Road, neglected six horses.
Deputies were alerted by "concerned citizens to the condiion of the horses and the lack of adequate food, water and shelter," according to a statement from the department.
The horses were being kept in a muddy corral without shelter, with a small amount of moldy hay and with very little water, according to deputies.
A veterinarian examined the animals, and all six of them needed "immediate medical attention." All the horses were removed from where they were and boarded out of the area. One horse subsequently died, deputies said.
The remaining horses are responding well to treatment, deputies noted.
Malone was charged with six counts of cruelty to animals by neglect, a violation of the state's agriculture and markets laws. Malone was released without bail, to appear again in Town of Stockholm court.
