Biloxi police officer shoots charging pit bull

MISSISSIPPI -- A Biloxi police officer fatally shot a pit bull after it charged at an animal control officer and then charged at the patrol officer who came to her aid, Police Sgt. Jackie Rhodes said.

The incident happened Monday after police received a complaint that a stray dog had bitten an adult in the 1600 block of Hollywood Boulevard, just west of Keesler Air Force Base.

The animal control officer tried to gain control of the dog when it attacked her and tried to bite her, Rhodes said. The dog then tried to attack the responding patrol officer, who fired one shot, he said.

Police were not immediately able to identify the dog's owner. Its remains were taken to the Humane Society of South Mississippi for rabies testing, Rhodes said.

The city has a leash law and ordinances with procedures on dealing with dog-bite complaints and aggressive dogs.
