CALIFORNIA -- A pit bull attacked a San Diego County Sheriff's deputy Friday night while the deputy was searching a home in San Marcos, the Sheriff's Department said.
The department gave the following account:
Deputies were searching the home of a parolee or probationer when a pit bull bit the arm of one deputy and would not let go. Deputies fired two shots at the dog, striking it once. The dog released the deputy's arm but then attempted to bite him again.
A second shot was fired at the dog, which then fled into an adjacent room. The deputy was taken to the hospital in nearby Escondido for treatment of dog bites. Animal control officials arrived and took control of the dog, which was euthanized at an animal hospital.
The search was conducted under a 4th Amendment waiver in which, as a condition of parole or probation, an offender agrees to allow law enforcement to enter their home unannounced and without a warrant.
