Dog rescued after falling through ice on Red River

MINNESOTA -- A Moorhead woman and her dog are safe after a Saturday afternoon scare on the Red River.

Deb Olson was out walking her Golden Retriever Maggie around 3:30 p.m., when the dog ran across the river and broke through the ice about 20 to 30 feet from shore, said Assistant Fire Chief Rich Eggert.

Olson tried getting her out but couldn’t. A passerby called 911. Moorhead Fire Department Capt. Todd Church put on a cold-water wet suit and was able to pull Maggie out.

“This story has a happy ending, but it doesn’t always work that way,” Eggert says. “The big thing we want to stress is that the ice isn’t safe.”

Eggert and the Moorhead Fire Department urge people and their pets to stay away from the river ice and be cautious.
