Elderly woman bitten by two Pit Bulls while walking on Fourth Street in Madison

GEORGIA -- An 81-year-old woman walking Fourth Street in Madison was attacked and injured by two Pit Bulls on Friday, Nov. 2.

According to Madison Police Department reports, the woman told officers that while she was walking on Fourth Street at approximately 4 p.m. two Pit Bulls ran onto the road and attacked her.

The woman said that a black Pit Bull bit her on the left arm and a white Pit Bull bit her on the right leg. Reports state that officers interviewed the woman at Morgan Memorial Hospital and observed a bite wound on the woman's left arm near the bicep and a serious bite wound on her right leg near the calf.

The woman said she yelled at the dogs and they ran away.

An officer said he met with Madison Control Officer Cindy Wiemann on Fourth Street and the two dogs were located at a residence at 563 Fourth Street.

Wiemann said both dogs have been detained at the Morgan County Animal Shelter. She said the dogs have been declared "dangerous" dogs by the city. The dog's owner will be sent a certified letter notifying that the dogs are now considered dangerous. Wiemann said "each dog bit (the victim) once and fled."

The dog's owner will have the right to appeal the dangerous dog designation with the Madison City Councl. If the appeal is rejected the owner will have to insure that the dogs are kept in a secure enclosure with clearly visible warning signs and cannot be kept within 200 yards of a church, convenience store, daycare centers and other gathering places.

Wiemann said she was in contact with the dog's owner regarding the options but the owner has not been served with the dangerous dog notification. The Pit Bulls were a 2-year-old female and a 4-year-old male. Both dogs had been sterilized prior to this incident, Wiemann said.
