Horse death underscores need to control dogs

COLORADO -- The death of a horse last week has wildlife officials reminding citizens to keep their dogs under control at all times.

The horse was found dead in the vicinity of Chipeta Road on Nov. 4, and its condition raised concerns that a mountain lion had attacked it.

An investigation by state Parks and Wildlife officials determined the horse had impaled itself on a T-post, likely after having been chased by loose or stray dogs.

“We can’t say with 100-percent surety, but from what we saw, it had probably been chased by dogs,” CPW spokesman Joe Lewandowski said.

“Attacks on horses by mountain lions are very rare. We investigate these things. A horse is a big animal, and usually, it will kick off a mountain lion.”
