Family pit bull attacks 5-year-old, grandmother in Griffin

GEORGIA -- Griffin officers responded to the 1300 block of Ruth Street after a pit bull attacked a child on Wednesday.

Cpl. Stan Phillips attempted to pull the dog off the 5-year-old, but he was forced to shoot and kill the dog to prevent further injuries.

The child was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for treatment. The child's grandmother was also treated by EMS at the scene.

According to investigators, the animal was a family dog and was inside the fenced-in area of the home.

The dog's body was taken to the Spalding County Animal shelter where employees will make arrangements for testing of the animal's remains to check for rabies.

Two other dogs were also taken to the Spalding County Animal Shelter.
