It was determined that the infant’s mother, Sarah Jennings, was working for her mother’s business Deep Creek Kennel, located at 1221 Deep Creek Lane in Yadkinville. Jennings and the infant were located in the office of the kennel, which is separated from the kennel area by a door.
The investigation determined that at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 9, a customer came into the kennel with a pet to board. Jennings took the dog and its owner through a doorway into the kennel area to place the animal into one of the kennels. The door was closed behind them but failed to properly latch.
At that time a rottweiler that belonged to Robin Jennings, the infant’s grandmother, pushed against the unlatched door and entered the office area where the child was located, according to a release sent by the sheriff’s office.
Robin Jennings and Sarah Jennings immediately went into the office and found the rottweiler standing beside the child and discovered the child had been bitten, according to the release. The mother then transported the child to the Yadkin Valley Community Hospital for treatment.
Robin Jennings took the rottweiler to a local veterinary hospital where it was euthanized. The dog was later turned over to a Yadkin County Animal Control Officer for testing. The infant died a short time later at the local hospital from what appears to be a single dog bite to the head.
Forsyth County Medical Examiner Dr. Donald Jason reported that the child was wearing a multi-colored knit cap that the dog may have mistaken for a ball or toy. The cause of death was ruled to be brain and head injuries that resulted from the dog bite.
Investigators found that the dog had no history of aggressive behavior.
At the conclusion of the investigation the incident was reviewed by the district attorney’s office. No charges will be filed in the case.
