GEORGIA -- An Effingham County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering this evening after being attacked by a pit bull.
It was just after 1 pm Thursday when Cpl. Derick Seckinger went to the 1300 block of Clyo Shawnee Road on a report of an aggressive dog. Once the deputy arrived on scene he was mauled by the dog which broke loose from a chain which was tied to a tree.
Deputy Seckinger suffered dog bites to his arm and chest. During the attack, he fired two shots striking the dog. The dog was euthanized shortly after the incident.
The dog's owner, 33 year old Michael Jenkins of Clyo, was cited for dog at large.
Effingham deputies have responded to his residence several times in the past for having a dog at large.
The deputy was treated and released at a local hospital.
