North Carolina: Pit bulls attack miniature horses in their pens

NORTH CAROLINA -- John Riggs walks his property with a rifle these days, after dogs - described as pit bulls by witnesses - attacked his miniature horse "Shadow."

"Now we feel like we can't even walk down our driveway," he said.

The horse was left frightened and weak by the attack.

"My daughter and the vet had to pull him and put him in the pen because he was bleeding so bad. So, she's put stitches in him staples on the side of his face where he was bleeding," said Riggs.

Now, Shadow faces a long road to recovery and a serious risk of infection from the multiple dog bites. His owners face a mountain of veterinary bills, and so does their neighbor Juanita Pearce who lives just across the street.

Her horse "Justin" was also attacked by the dogs.

"My horse did get a good lick and kicked him up in the air and rolled him over but he still kept coming after him," she said.

Pearce said one pit bull bit her horse on its back leg. By the time deputies arrived, the dogs, described as gray and brown in color, ran off into the woods.

"Now I've got to worry about two dogs coming around, so that's scary," said Pearce.

The families live off Preston Andrews Road in the Bahama area.

They want whoever owns the dogs to come forward.

"They need to do the right thing," said Pearce.

"The person whoever owns the dog, knows their dog was gone on Tuesday. So, call the police and tell them their dog might have been loose that day, so they can at least have the dogs checked," said Riggs.

Riggs also wanted to warn other families in the area - as concerns shifts from the horses to children who play outside.

"When it's out loose running with other dogs, it's a dangerous dog. We've got like four or five young kids," he said. "If they'd been out there, it would been on them."

The Durham County Sheriff's Office said if anyone spots the dogs, please call 911 right away. They've been seen along Highway 15-501, but they've not been captured.
