NEBRASKA -- Two pit bulls attacked a city man and killed a small dog in the Whitetail Lake area before being captured by Platte County Sheriff’s deputies about four hours later.
The pit bulls bit Jerald Keller, an employee of Commonwealth Electric Co. of the Midwest, 759 S. 33rd Ave., about 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sheriff Jon Zavadil said Friday.
The bite victim was treated and released at Columbus Community Hospital, but no information on injuries was available.
The dogs, owned by Sam Fackler, were taken to Redstone Veterinary Hospital after being captured about 3:30 p.m. in the Whitetail Lake area. The dogs are required by state law to undergo a 10-day evaluation after a biting incident.
“By the time the dogs were located, the owner had shown up and was able to get them under control,” Zavadil said. The sheriff did not know the name of the owner of the dog that was killed.
Zavadil said the investigation is ongoing and a report will be forwarded to the Platte County Attorney’s Office to determine if any citations will be issued.
The preliminary investigation revealed the dogs’ owner, who wasn’t home at the time of the biting incident, lived in a trailer parked in the strip mall where Commonwealth Electric is located on the east side of South 33rd Avenue (U.S. Highway 81).
“Whether the dogs were penned up or chained, I don’t know,” Zavadil said. After the animals got loose, they jumped the masonry fence separating the strip mall and the housing subdivision, he said.
There is no leash law in the county on the south side of the Loup River.
