Tiffany Charlton and Mike Kelley, of Hamilton Street S.W., each pleaded no contest to animal cruelty and were handed down the sentence Thursday by Warren Municipal Court Judge Thomas Gysegem.
Like father, like daughter: Charlton's father, Randall Charlton, also faces cruelty charges |
Gysegem also ruled the two must make Animal Welfare League officials aware of their address if they ever move to a different location so they can be monitored.
A third man involved in the case, Tiffany Charlton’s father, Randall, will go to a second pre-trial on two charges of animal cruelty. Gysegem denied Randall Charlton's request to regain custody of his two pets that were taken.
One dog in the Charlton home survived and is being treated.
A person who stopped by the couple’s home last month to pick up a refrigerator noticed a foul odor and alerted police.
Inside, officers found dead animals scattered throughout the house, including in the hallway, living room and bedroom.
One dog was found partially eaten in the living room. A crate full of dead cats was found outside.
In September, health concerns prompted Warren police and health officials to force the couple to get rid of all but four of the 15 dogs that were living in the house. The remaining dogs were to be tagged.
At that time, the home was found to be in deplorable condition and the dogs appeared to be malnourished.
The company that owns the land contract for the home said they intend to demolish the house.
Necropsies performed on the animals showed they died from malnourishment and neglect.
