ALABAMA -- An Athens man was arrested Friday for allegedly starving his dog, which was confiscated by an animal-control officer.
Jeremiah Dewayne Smith, 32, of Friend Road, numeric address unavailable, is charged with first-degree animal cruelty involving a dog.
Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said Saturday the case involved a dog the owner was not adequately feeding.
“We received a call on Jan. 7 about a dog at a trailer park on Neely Road,” Blakely said. “We believe the owner basically (nearly) starved it to death.”
After interviewing neighbors and Smith, Limestone County deputies obtained an arrest warrant for Smith, the sheriff said.
“An animal-control officer picked up the dog, and the veterinarian who examined it said it was about to the point of death,” Blakely said.
Smith remained in the Limestone County Jail Saturday. Bail had not yet been set.
