FLORIDA -- A 10-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after being attacked by a dog who was shot and killed by police.
Chris Fuentes is sad and disappointed and said his 1-year-old terrier, Simba, was never aggressive.
"No, he was playful. I have five nieces and nephews, and the smallest one is 2 months, and he plays around with him," said Fuentes.
According to Miami-Dade Police, the dog attacked 10-year-old Israel Moise along Northwest 10th Avenue and 108th Street on Wednesday.
The child was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was bandaged and treated for a deep bite wound to his right leg. "He told me it hurt," said Rigaud Moise, the victim's father. Moise pointed to his own leg and made a circular shape with his hands to described the wound.
Asked if the dog was off his leash, Fuentes responded, "Yeah, he was off the leash, but my property is secured. I have locks and everything on it."
Fuentes said the dog was kept behind a chained fence in his home and is not sure how the dog got out. "The dog is here to protect my property," he said.
Police said, when officers arrived, Simba turned on them and an officer was forced to fire at the dog.
"I feel bad for the kid, obviously," said Fuentes. "I can't feel bad for my dog because he's dead already, so the only thing I can feel bad for is the kid. and I hope he's OK."
