1/23/13: Couple cited for 180 violations after cats removed

GEORGIA -- Two people are cited with 180 city ordinance violations in connection with abandoning 42 cats.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Animal Control officers on Wednesday morning cited Evans Bolin, 40, and Melissa Pope, 41 with keeping of animals-sanitation; failure to report/remove dead animals; limitations on cats; distance of animals; 40 counts rabies vaccination required; 40 counts county tag required; 50 counts animal neglect; and 50 counts each animal abandonment.

On Saturday, Animal Control officers were called to a house in the 1300 block of East 60th Street. The owner discovered the cats when he checked on the home after the couple had been evicted.

The cats seized from the home were turned over to Animal Control. Some have yet to be captured.

Forty-two and several litters already have been humanely captured and removed over several days by luring them into traps and transporting them to animal shelter on where they will be examined by a staff veterinarian before they are available for adoption.

The cats range from days old to adults. Some cats are pregnant and three died before they were found.

The house was covered in waste and some cats were living in walls and under the house and porch.
