Indianapolis police shoot, kill dog after elderly woman attacked on northeast side

Woman listed in serious condition

INDIANA -- An Indianapolis police officer had to shoot a pit bull mix three times after it attacked an elderly woman on the city's northeast side Sunday, police said.

The dog attacked the woman about 2:10 p.m. in the 5700 block of Oxford Street, police said.

A neighbor flagged down an officer, who found the dog on top of the woman, police said.

The officer was able to lure the dog away, but it then lunged at him, prompting the officer to use pepper spray before shooting the dog three times, killing the animal, police said.

The woman was taken to Wishard Hospital in serious condition.
