Lyons man charged with putting dog in hot oven

OREGON -- Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies accused a 20-year-old Lyons man of putting his grandmother’s dog in a hot oven and arrested him on charges of aggravated abuse 1, a class C felony.

Kevin Dean Parrish, who reportedly told deputies he had anger issues, put Kudo, a 6-year-old Chihuahua - [Miniature Pinscher] mix, into an oven that had been heated to 350 degrees after the dog nipped him.

The 9-pound dog suffered “multiple injuries and burns,” said Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Don Thomson.

“Deputies learned that the dog suffered from cuts and bruises to his head, his body hair was singed and three of his legs badly burned from contact with the oven rack. The dog had difficulty standing because of its injuries,” Thomson said.

Parrish lives with his grandmother and was caring for the dog while she has been out of state. He took the dog out of the oven when he heard his brother coming into the house. Parrish’s brother and father took Kudo to Ark Animal Care in Mill City. His father then called deputies.

Dr. Keri Sanders, who treated Kudo, expects the dog to soon have a clean bill of health.

“As far as I know he should make a full recovery,” Sanders said.

Thomson said Parrish told deputies he was about to put his lunch into the oven when he stopped to check on the dog, which was in a kennel. When he reached into the kennel, the dog tried to bite him.

“Parrish said he lost control, grabbed the dog and started punching it in the head with his fist. He also admitted trying to strangle the dog,” Thomson said.

Remembering that the oven was hot, Parrish decided to put the dog in it because he was still mad at the animal, the deputy said.

Parrish was booked into the Marion County jail. His bail is set at $10,000. The sheriff’s department said Parrish has no previous criminal record.
