CALIFORNIA -- A San Diego man who allegedly kicked his 11-year-old poodle and failed to seek medical care for the injured animal was charged with felony animal cruelty, the San Diego Humane Society announced Thursday.
Oswaldo Velasquez faces a preliminary hearing Feb. 25.
Last Nov. 19, officials from the Humane Society and Society for the Protection of Animals said they responded to a call of concern that Velasquez was seen kicking a small white dog and that the dog was very matted.
Upon arrival, officers found the dog — named Freddy — in bad condition with his right eye protruding from the socket, appearing red and infected.
Freddy was impounded under protective custody of the Humane Society and SPCA.
“We rely on information from the community about suspected animal abuse or neglect,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president of the Humane Society and SPCA."We look into every single report of suspected abuse that we receive, which equates to more than 2,000 per year. These tips are so important to be able to seek justice for animals who cannot defend themselves.”
Freddy was treated for his injuries, but lost the vision in both eyes. The dog was rehabilitated and adopted in a loving home on Jan. 8, officials said.
Velasquez — who was arraigned Tuesday — also faces a misdemeanor charge for failure to provide veterinary care.
