FLORIDA -- A pit bull named Tyson was shot and killed by Melbourne police after it attacked an officer.
Officers responded to reports of a man battering a woman at a home in the 900 block of Garfield at about 2:15 p.m., according to Lt. Byron Barnes. When they arrived at the residence, Tyson, one of two pit bulls, attacked an officer. Another responding officer fatally shot the dog.
The officer was bitten on the leg, but there was no puncture. Police determined there was an argument between two residents at the house, but made no arrests.
Capt. Bob Brown of Brevard Animal Services said the dog won’t be tested for disease, as there was no possibility it could be spread.
“As far as we know, there was no exposure,” Brown said.
Brown’s department will hold the dog until the out-of-state owner can come to claim it.
