TENNESSEE -- A man is being held on aggravated animal cruelty charges on Wednesday, Jan. 16 after his dog was found dead in Memphis.
According to the Commercial Appeal, Zangerio Dogan was arrested after the dog was found frozen to the ground in the yard of a home belonging to his sister. The 28-year-old said he left the pit bull in the care of his sister, while she insisted she thought he had picked up the dog some weeks prior.
The dog was severely emaciated, so neither Dogan nor his sister had apparently fed or cared for the dog in some time. There was also no evidence of proper shelter on the premises, which could be deadly for any dog left outside during the recent icy weather experienced in Memphis, especially one who wasn’t receiving nourishment.
Authorities haven’t determined the actual cause of death.
Since the dog was in the custody of Dogan’s sister at the time, unknowingly or not, it would seem she is also culpable in the neglect that resulted in this dog’s death, however, authorities have not said whether she would be charged.
