Pit bull bites off woman's thumb

TEXAS -- A pit bull was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies in Texas after the dog bit off a 70-year-old woman's thumb, officials said.

The attack happened Saturday afternoon in Tornillo. The woman, 70, was visiting her grandson in the 500 block of Apalooza Street when she reached for her purse. His female pit bull attacked her and bit off her thumb, said sheriff's spokeswoman Deputy Angelica Becerra.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the dog was showing signs of aggressiveness and was shot and killed by a deputy, Becerra said.

"The owner of the dog cried for his dog because he's had her since she was a kid," said a neighbor.

The woman was taken to a local hospital where doctors said they would try to reattach her thumb, Becerra said.
