NEW JERSEY -- A pit bull that attacked a cat on Christmas day, injuring it so badly that authorities say the cat had to be euthanized, has itself been put down, according to a report on DailyRecord.com.
The report said the pit bull was euthanized after owner Mark Flynn of Boonton Township turned it over to the Montville Animal Shelter. An announcement by police about the incident earlier this week stated the pit bull had been turned over to the shelter for adoption.
Boonton Township Police and the shelter have not yet returned calls seeking confirmation the pit bull was euthanized, and asking about how the decision to put the dog down was made.
Police said in an announcement earlier this week that at about 1:45 p.m. on Christmas, officers responding to a call found the pit bull attacking the cat in a River Road driveway. Officers intervened and were able to separate the animals, but the cat had suffered extensive injuries, police said.
Flynn was charged with allowing his dog to run at large, allowing a dog to be a public nuisance and owning an unregistered dog, police said.
