Pit Bull quarantined after Shelby County attacks

KENTUCKY -- When Judy Tipton came home from work last Thursday, she noticed a strange dog on her family's property on Kings Highway.

"The dog had been back at the barn and had gone after the horses and didn't go after my daughter at all, and then came up here and attacked Speckles," Tipton said.

Speckles is her parent's pet.

Immediately, Judy says she and her sister took action to "try to save the dog -- that's all we were doing. Saving mom and daddy's dog."

The sisters did indeed save Speckles -- who is recovering at the Shelby County Animal Shelter with puncture wounds to the neck.

But they also contained the dog responsible.

"I held onto his collar and Peggy attached the lead line to the dog and I called 911 and they came and got the dog," Tipton said.

"It is a Pit Bull," said Rusty Newton, Deputy Judge-Executive and Animal Control Director.

Newton says they want to know if that's the animal that has been attacking livestock and pets in the Waddy area.

At least half-a-dozen pets have had to be put down after being attacked. The main suspect is now the dog captured last week.

That dog is now quarantined at the Shelby County Animal Shelter. Officials did not want us to show it on camera because they're not sure it's responsible for all the attacks.

"I know everyone wants to get this case resolved," Newton said. "We do as well, but we don't want to put a target on an animal's back if it's not deserved."

While they say the dog has not been aggressive to shelter employees, there is a chance that it is aggressive to animals.

Tipton says she's just hoping the animal attacks now end.

"We're hoping. We just happened to be at the right place at the right time and we saved the dog," Tipton said.

Animal control officials say the dog's owner is cooperating in the investigation.

Anyone with information about the attacks is asked to come forward.
