Police officer shoots aggressive dog attacking children

NEW JERSEY -- Police responded around 4 p.m. this afternoon to a report of two large, aggressive Rottweilers running loose in the Harding lakes section of town.

The two dogs then entered a playground occupied by three children and one adult.

Officials say, "One of the dogs went after a 7-year old girl and subsequently bit the girl's aunt on the arm as she tried to keep the dog away from the child."

In order to protect the children, the officer and the girl's aunt helped all three kids onto an elevated piece of the playground.

The same dog circled around and attacked the officer, which is when he fired three shots and killed the dog.

The adult female was treated for minor injuries at AMCM Mainland. None of the children were injured as a result of this incident.

The second dog ran from the scene. Charges for the dogs' owner are pending further investigation.
