Troy woman heads to prison for setting fire that killed dog

NEW YORK -- A Troy woman will be heading to prison for setting a fire that killed a dog in Colonie.

Khadijah Hopkins pleaded guilty to burglary and cruelty to animals Friday.

[She had originally been charged with burglary, arson and felony aggravated cruelty to animals for having burned the dog alive.]

Prosecutors say she broke into an acquaintance's home on Elm Street back in November and stole several items.

Before leaving, they say she set the house on fire.

Firefighters found a dead dog in its crate, inside the burning home.

Hopkins faces 8 years in state prison when she's sentenced in March.
