Dog attacks, seriously injures south NJ infant

NEW JERSEY -- A 10-month-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries after a dog locked the infant in its jaws Saturday evening in a Central Avenue home, police said.

The dog, which is either a bulldog or pit bull, inflicted deep lacerations near the girl’s left ear, rear head and neck, Sgt. Glenn Clayton said.

The mother of the girl told police she was sitting in the living room while the girl was playing with the dog on the floor. The dog unexpectedly lunged at the girl around 8:30 p.m., Clayton said.

The dog does not belong to the girl’s parents. However, police do not know why the dog was with the mother and daughter, Clayton said.

The girl was flown by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune Township, Clayton said.
