The Pit Bulls' owner voluntarily gave the dogs up Thursday morning. Wednesday afternoon they reportedly attacked and mauled to death a 10-pound Dachshund named "Starlight."
Caged at Liberty Animal Control, CBS47 finds the two pit bulls that mauled a Dachshund. The dogs apparently broke through the fence separating two backyards.
"There was blood underneath the jaw of one of the dogs, which was clear because the dog was white," said Daniel Bailey of Liberty Animal Control.
Starlight is greatly missed by his owner.
"Still very upset. He was my little baby," said Lavonne Reger, Starlight's owner.
Reger had just let Starlight and her other dogs outside when the attack happened. She wishes her neighbors would have kept a closer eye on their pit bulls.
"High risk dogs, I guess is a good way to call them, to make sure they stay in their yard," said Reger.
A man who lives in the neighborhood says he sees dogs off leash all the time. He blames their owners.
"They do not care. They don't care. They think it's a free world and they can do what they want," said John Hannan.
Animal control says the Pit Bulls' owner tearfully signed the dogs over to its custody on Thursday. They'll likely be euthanized within 48 hours. Liberty would be liable if it tried to find new owners for the dogs.
"Having it occur to a child or somebody else, we wouldn't take that risk," said Bailey.
CBS47 did try to reach the owner of the Pit Bulls, but no one was at home.
