Preston man charged with 75 counts of animal cruelty

WEST VIRGINIA -- A Preston County man is facing 75 counts of animal cruelty.

Magistrate Court officials say 42-year-old Eglon resident David Wayne Shahan was released Tuesday on a $5,000 bond.

Last month, sheriff's deputies seized more than 100 animals, including 61 chickens, 34 rabbits, seven dogs and five goats.

Sgt. J.L. Root Jr. says he got a tip about mistreatment and found eight dead rabbits and a dead dog on a visit in January.

The rabbits and chickens had no access to food and water. Root says at least three dogs appeared malnourished.

If convicted, Shahan faces fines of up to $2,000 and up to six months in jail on each count.

The Dominion Post says a plea hearing is set for March 12.
