OHIO -- The dogs wouldn’t back down.
Holly Gray tried to fight them off with a stick, but they continued to attack. She’d stumbled upon the dogs — two boxers and a beagle — feasting on an animal carcass during her solo hike through Chillicothe’s Great Seal State Park on Thursday evening. Now they turned their attention to her.
Gray called her husband. She told him where to find her. She was pinned against a tree. Steven Gray called for help and headed her way.
Gray, 54, of Kingston, survived the attack with several bites on her lower body. The dogs did not. Ross County Sgt. Mont Steele, who tracked Gray down with her husband, shot one of the boxers after it charged them. The other dogs were euthanized.
Their owner, Tommy Collier of Chillicothe, was cited for allowing his dogs to run at large, said county Dog Warden Waneta Wellinghoff.
Collier’s dogs had never been a problem, and Gray was familiar with both Collier and his pets, Wellinghoff said. He agreed to have his dogs put down and was “pretty upset” about Gray’s injuries, Wellinghoff said.
Gray was treated at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe and released. The sheriff’s office said she was home yesterday, recovering. She did not return phone calls.
