"I'm sad. They called me and let me know the police were chasing somebody and they shot my dog," said Gomez.
Gomez's female pit bull Huera was shot by police after it attacked a police dog during a pursuit.
Officers had jumped into Gomez's yard while chasing a wanted felon when one of their canine units ran into his pit bull.
"The officer tried to fend the pit bull off, the pit bull continued to attack and the officer was forced to shoot the dog twice," said Sgt. Andy Mercado.
Officers later arrested the man they were after. 36-year old Filiberto Lopez was found hiding not far from Gomez's yard. Police say a relative had tipped them off about Lopez, who was wanted for a domestic violence charge.
But it was too late for Huera, who while bloodied, was still alive, but since Gomez couldn't afford the cost to have her treated he opted to have the human society take her away to be humanely euthanized.
"The good thing is that she left behind some little kids," said Gomez.
A handful of puppies that Gomez says will always remind his family of Huera.
