Pit bull in custody after killing six birds

MASSACHUSETTS -- A pit bull that killed a neighbor’s four chickens and two turkeys Thursday morning could be adopted by a Boston-based animal humane society.

Taunton Animal Control Officer Manny Massa said the female dog got into a fenced-in yard at 5 Winthrop Place sometime before 9 a.m.

Despite the carnage, Massa said when he arrived after being contacted by police, the pit bull didn’t give him any trouble.

“She was very friendly,” said Massa, who estimated the dog’s age as being between two and three years.

He said the dog is “in custody,” for the time being, at the city’s West Water Street animal shelter.

Massa said he expects to meet Monday with a representative of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal’s Angell Animal Medical Center. He would not, however, confirm if the owner has agreed to give up the pet.

Massa also said he’s issuing a $50 citation to the owner for violating the city’s leash law.
