NORTH CAROLINA -- The Spring Lake man who is accused of attacking his neighbor's dog with a samurai sword turned himself in Friday night, court records show.

Laurence Joseph Dyson, 36, of the 500 block of North Grogg Street, was charged with animal cruelty in the March 3 attack, Spring Lake police said.

He was processed at the Cumberland County Detention Center and was released on a $5,000 unsecure bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Spring Lake police responded to 1401 Morrison Ave. around 9:30 p.m. after learning about an injured dog.

Levan McDaniel, the dog's owner, told police Dyson attacked the dog with the sword. McDaniel said he initially thought his dog - a German Shepherd mix - had been hit by a car. But he said he was told about the attack by another neighbor.

Three-quarters of the dog's left ear was cut off, and it had several lacerations, said Dr. John Lauby, director of Cumberland County Animal Services.
