Woman found guilty of animal cruelty

NEW YORK -- A Wawarsing woman has been found guilty in town court of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor, for failing to provide necessary sustenance – food, water, shelter, ventilation, and medical care, for several animals kept on her property at 91 Towne Road in Wawarsing.

Kathy Murphy was found guilty on Thursday by a jury in town court. She will be sentenced in May.

Last September, 95 birds were removed by the Ulster County SPCA from outdoor enclosures on her property.  At that time, authorities said most of the birds were subjected to muddy environments saturated in feces, or contained in sheds or porches with poor air quality.

The conditions in which the birds were houses led to ailments and injuries including abscessed wounds, feather deficiencies, respiratory infections, fungal infections or missing or injured eyes.
